Bagamoyo - Saadani National Park

Saadani National Park is part of the Bagamoyo District Coastal Important Bird area (TZ IBA 46).

Conservation Initiatives: World Wildlife Fund for Nature and Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania supported forestry conservation initiatives within the old Zaraninge forest reserve (now part of Saadani NP). More recently GTZ provided considerable investment in the establishment of the Saadani National Park and in its community based conservation programme.

Description: Dry forest, riverine forest, Brachystegia and Acacia woodland, coastal thicket, plateau forest and swamps between 0 - 300 m asl

Location: 5 5 46’ S - 6° 13’ S; 38° 34’ E – 38° 49’ E

Closest settlements: Neighbouring settlements: Saadani, Mkwaja, Mkalamu, Mbwebwe and Gongo

Area: 110 000 ha

There is one Important Bird Areas found in Kazimzumbwi and Pugu Forest Reserves (TZ IBA 47).

Conservation Initiatives: The Misitu Yetu Project (a collaboration between Tanzania Forest Conservation Group, CARE International and the Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania) worked in the district to support communities, civil society and government to manage and benefit from the coastal forest between 2000 and 2005. Food and Agricultural Organsation / Global Environment Facility has provided institutional support to the Regional and District Natural Resources offices.

Reserve name: Kazimzumbwi Forest Reserve

Description: Dry lowland forest, riverine and groundwater forest, thicket and grassland between 120 - 280m asl

Location: 6° 55’ S - 7° 02’ S; 39° 02’ E - 39° 04’ E

Closest settlements: 20 km SW of Dar es Salaam, 2 km from Kisarawe town

FAO/GEF has provided institutional support to the Regional and District Natural Resources offices.

Kibaha - Ruvu North Forest Reserve

Reserve name: Ruvu North Forest Reserve

Description: Disturbed dry forest, riverine forest, thicket and woodland mosaic between 40 - 140 m asl; however only 200 ha of natural habitat remains, the rest is plantation

Location: 6° 33’ 16” S - 6° 43’ 00” S; 38° 47’ 00” E - 39° 02’ 00” E

Closest settlements: 5 km from Buma village

Area: 40 468 ha

Threatened species: Baphia kirkii (V), Dialium holtzii (V), Khaya anthotheca (V)

Threats: Logging, charcoal production, fire, cultivation and settlement

Conservation initiatives: Productive Forest Reserve managed by the Ruvu Fuelwood Pilot Project, a project of the Forestry and Beekeeping Division with financial support from NORAD.

Description: Lowland forest between 0 - 20 m asl

Threatened species: Baphia kirkii (V), Rhynchocyon petersi (E)

Threats: Large areas of forest clear-felled and burnt for shifting cultivation.

There are Important Bird Areas found in Kiwengoma Forest Reserve (TZ IBA 48).

Conservation Initiatives: Some forests have been focal project sites for the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Coastal Forest Programme, which was initiated in 1991 and continues today. Forest conservation in the district have been supported by the Rufiji Environment Management Project from 1998 – 2003 with some continuing initiatives under the IUCN Forest Program.

Key economic and hydrological values: Logging is a key economic activity especially with increased access to the northern part of Tanzania with the opening of the Mkapa Bridge. The Rufiji Delta has great hydrological value in the area.

 

Katundu Forest ReserveRufiji - Katundu Forest Reserve

Reserve name: Katundu Forest Reserve

Description: Woodland with small areas of groundwater forest between 100 - 350 m asl

Location: 8° 03’ S; 38° 46’ E

Closest settlements: Unknown

Area: 4727 ha

Threats: Roads to Selous, logging, encroachment from cashew nuts, no management
